A winning cover letter structure
A cover letter should be brief (one page maximum), tailored and convincing. It adds context to your CV rather than repeating it.
Four-part structure
1. Opening (one paragraph)
Grab attention and show that you know the company.
Example: “Your recent funding round and expansion into Africa caught my attention.”
2. The company (one paragraph)
Describe its work, needs and challenges.
Example: “Your company is working towards [goal]. I understand that [challenge].”
3. Your contribution (one or two paragraphs)
Present your skills, achievements and the value you bring.
Example: “With [X] years in [field], I achieved [measurable result].”
4. What you can achieve together (closing)
Explain the next step and suggest a conversation.
Example: “I would welcome the chance to discuss how I can contribute to [goal].”
- Tailor every letter; recruiters can spot generic templates.
- Do not repeat your CV: add context and personality.
- Keep it to one page.
- Mention recent company news, such as funding or a product launch.
- Show that you understand the company’s challenges.
- For international roles, mention your time-zone flexibility where relevant.
